Review! Samsung UN60H7150 Review (UN60H7150AFXZA)

The UN60H7150 60 inch LED TV is a top contender for 2014 when it comes to picture quality and the feature set. You get the super fast 240Hz panel for fast motion images and panning smoothing. This model replaces the F7100 series last year and contains a feature rich set without going overboard. It's one of my favorite models for the year and in my opinion is one of the best looking TVs on the market. What's the most unique thing about this series? It's the highest series in Samsung's 2014 lineup to offer a flat 1080p picture. The biggest picture quality difference between this one and the H8000 above it is in the micro-dimming feature. The H8000's micro-dimming really makes for increased contrast where needed while the H7150's micro-dimming failed to make a difference that was noticable. A big plus for the 60H7150 series over the H6450 series is the inclusion of the split screen Smart TV feature powered by a quad-core processor.

Strengths

  • Contrast, Color, Black Levels are excellent for an LED TV
  • Stong LED edge lighting produces top notch light flow-through for dynamic images
  • SD programming upconversion looks great
  • Game Mode is perfect for gamers
  • Quad core processor makes the Smart Hub run very smooth and fast
  • Smart Hub has a great mix of usefull paid and free apps
  • Automotion plus really comes in handy for optimizing 3D content picture quality
  • Appearance/Design is very impressive
  • New split screen feature makes the Smart Hub even more useful
  • Smart touch remote now has point and click functionality

    Weaknesses

  • Side angle viewing for 2D content
  • Worse side angle viewing for 3D content
  • AutoMotion Plus really highlights unnatural effects to 2D shows and movies
  • Microdimming on the H8000 and above is much more effective

    Neutral

  • TV guide is nice, but probably isn't going to replace a cable or satellite box guide
  • Wifi Connectivity works well
  • Audio and Volume is good but not the best (2 woofers built-in help)
  • Voice Recognition may come in handy for getting around the Smart Hub
  • Color saturation very good but no competition for plasma displays of days past

    Picture Quality Rating: 90/100

    Strong LED Edge Backlight

Just like the F7100 from last year, the light flow through created by the LED Backlight on this TV is amazing. We consider it one of this TVs best picture quality characteristics. LED edge lighting is known to cause uniformity issues, but it can be addressed with a simple adjustment. Tone down the LED backlight in the picture settings menu to keep it from causing some uneven screen uniformity issues. 80% is a setting the what we usually recommend. This will keep screen uniformity issues from arising and you still have plenty of brightness from this super bright LED TV. Having powerful LED backlighting in case you need it for super bright room conditions is a plus.

This shot is an excellent example of the stunning color reproduction and contrast H7150 can muster. A strong display of depth is seen here as well

Auto Motion Plus - Know When to Use this Feature

The Auto Motion Plus feature in the UN60H7150 is something that comes as a blessing and a curse. By default it is set to On in all of the preset picture setting modes. You should turn it off for streaming content, DVDs, Blu-rays, and TV shows. You end up with the dreaded 'Soap Opera' effect, making images look terribly unrealistic by eliminating natural background blur. Turn it off in the Picture Options menu and everything will be fine again. You'll immediately see judder when you disable it, but your eyes will adjust momentarily. We've noticed that it actually helps when it comes to displaying 3D content and sports programming. When viewing 480i based content we saw slight improvements when the setting was low as well. Just be familiar with how to adjust this and it won't be a problem.
(Note: to get to the setting click on Menu, swipe across to Picture, Scroll all the way down to Picture Options, Scroll down to AutoMotion Plus.)

    3D Dual View

Active 3D viewing quality on the UN60H7150 provides an excellent performance like the F7100 predecessor. Samsung's active 3D glasses are the lightest and most comfortable in the active-3D marketplace and now have a new rounded design. Aside from that there is little difference as there was not much to improve upon. There is little to no crosstalk or distraction when viewing 3D content, but keep away direct light from the front of the room in which you are viewing or you will likely get a slight flicker from the edges of the glasses.
Dual View actually works great now and the picture is stunning. You can watch two different programs on the same screen with two people (or more) wearing active 3D glasses. It even works with 1 HDMI input. You can toggle back and forth between the two programs on as well by pressing a small button on the ear-handle of the glasses.

    Features Rating: 92/100

    Samsung Smart Hub

The Smart Hub keeps the same basic design as last year with subtle improvements. Samsung hit the mark with their user interface and intuitive nagivation. This time around you will see a Game tab as one of the major smart TV pages. The Smart Hub also allows for logins so each member of the family can have recommendations tailored to their viewing history. These changes show that Samsung really pays attention to the details when it comes to user experience. Just like last year the Smart Hub is one of the best options for a good smart TV experience. The quad core processor is just icing on the cake.

Touch Pad Controller and Split Screen Multitasking

    Samsung UN60H7150 Touchpad Remote
This year's touch remote features an egg shape with a smaller touch pad, but more buttons
Surfing the web and the Smart TV features is a breeze with the new touchpad remote. It's much faster and easier than a traditional 5-way controller. The actual touch pad is a bit smaller this year, but that's okay because it now supports motion control. This brings it closer to LG's Magic Remote. The smaller touch pad also leaves room for more useful buttons on the remote instead of the on-screen menus. This is a huge plus in our book! The new split screen feature is another addition that we think is a move in the right direction by Samsung. This makes it easy to view live TV and browse the web or use social media at the same time. This also allows tweets on right hand side of screen streaming while you watch programming.

    Appearance

The arch stand beneath the display of the UN60H7150 is a new look for Samsung. It reminds us of the design LG uses in most of their mid to high tier LED TVs. The glossy black plastic bezels measure in at an astounding 0.2 inches. This really helps with the frameless image look. The overall look is very sleek with a depth of just under 2 inches.

This is a new look for Samsung. The arching stand under the display give the TV a low profile look

Value - Bang for the Buck Rating: 89/100

The UN60H7150 is a very complete package when you really look at it. It also starts at around $1,999. You get some of the best features, a solid smart TV experience, and stellar picture quality. You give up a few high end features such as the quad-core processor, but in all I think this models covers most of the very important bases. Some of the low points like side angle viewing and built-in sound quality are not any reason to overlook this TV. Competition in the high end 1080p LED TV arena has been greatly reduced by the introduction of 4K and OLED models that are capturing the attention of manufacturers. The closest competitors for the year will be the Sony KDL-55W950B and new upcoming models from LG.

  • Review! Sony XBR-55X900B Bravia Review (XBR55X900B)

The standout features of the 55X900B are 1) the X-tended Dynamic Range feature which allows for more active zone control of the LED backlighting and 2) the Side Mounted speakers eliminate the need for a surround sound system. The side mounted speaks look a bit retro but the TV otherwise is so striking that overall it's a unique and great look. These speakers do not lack in performance characteristics especially not in the important vocals category.

    Strengths

  • Exceptional Color Rendition and super sharp resolution
  • Clarity and sense of depth in images
  • 65 watt 2.2 channel speakers are loud and sound great
  • Less judder than other LED TVs even with the Motionflow setting off
  • Passive 3D quality is best in market
  • Up-Conversion of 480, 720, 1080 material is a highlight and a very important quality
  • Weaknesses

  • Side angle Viewing is prone to typical LED problems
  • Menu and Smart TV navigation aren't as intuitive as other TV manufacturers
  • Expensive, but better than we thought they would be before release
  • The two different remotes dont add much value

    Picture Quality Rating: 95/100

This is one of the best pictures on the market as of this writing, unless you throw OLEDs into the mix. I'll go as far as saying it's probably the best LED TV if you ignore side angle viewing. We thoroughly enjoyed reviewing this TV and I was surprised how good the picture is after having seen it first at CES. Even after calibrating it away from the over-hyped preset picture modes. The Triluminous Display and the X-Reality Pro picture processing engine are two of Sony's best ever display technologies. The Triluminous display really does perform as promised in presenting truer colors, especially reds, and greens which tend to be more difficult. Throw in the X-tended Dynamic Range and the contrast levels really shine for an amazing picture.
    Sony XBR-55X900B 4K LED TV
This shot shows excellent contrat and detail while also highlighting the fact that Netflix has 4K streaming
Side angle viewing is a clear weakness in this display. That is nothing new for those familiar with LED TVs, but it is something that can be hard to swallow in a purchase as large as this one. The large screen sizes and proper placement of the TV help with the problem, but sometimes it cannot be overcome.

    Upconversion Technology

The key to this TV and any 4K TV is how well it up-converts standard and high definition signals for the 4K screen. This is very important since the amount of native 4K content is still limited and a delivery system is still being developed at this point.
I watched a 480p standard definition DVD on the X900B and was extremely impressed with the way the TV handled upconversion. Sony has good reputation when it comes to tackling these types of chanllenges. Once again, they have succeeded in creating a great picture where many others fail. I would say the picture you see from a decent quality standard definition source signal equates to about 1080p high def in appearance. So you do get an added bump in quality with this TV over a 1080p resolution panel. This in large part is due to the 4K X-Reality PRO engine, which adds a lot of value to the TV overall.
    Sony XBR-55X900B 4K LED TV
Sony has a 4K content box available for purchase that is loaded with plenty of 4K movies. This puts Sony miles ahead of the other guys with 4K content

    Motionflow Setting

Although this excellent TV has tons of great technology built in, it was not able to eliminate the Soap Opera effect (elimination of too much natural background blur) when de-juddering the picture image. It's still best left off for any kind of non-live-sports programming and since it comes set to on you will need to go through and turn it off in the menu (in the Advanced picture settings). The options within the Motion flow setting do make a big difference in the amount of Judder taken out and the effects on the picture vary quite a bit. The choices are: Clear, Clear Plus, Standard, Smooth, and new setting called Impulse. Out of the choices the Smooth or Standard setting seemed best to me.

3D – Active and Super Impressive

This is probably going to be the best looking 3D you've seen. The extra pixels make the definition and depth perception look incredible. Sony went with active 3D on the X900B instead of passive like we saw last year. We've been favoriting passive lately since quality is getting much better and the glasses are more comfortable with a lower price tag. But, the active 3D on this 4K screen is really something. It's better than the theater, it really is. Watching Avatar in 3D on this TV I was mesmerized by the color, depth, and clean edges. You will want the Motionflow feature on for 3D and setting the TV to the dedicated 3D picture mode option accomplishes this. The 3D picture mode is not in the same area as the normal picture mode options. It's down further in the picture menu.
Side angle viewing contrast and color fades with 3D viewing hurting the picture the further you go. The fading starts at around 20 degrees off center but it's not bad until you get to around 25 degrees. Comes with 2 pairs of 3D glasses and additional pairs are around 40 bucks.

    Features Rating: 85/100

    Sony Entertainment Network

The new layout of the Sony Entertainment Network presents Movies, Apps, Music, and Albums as the layout for content. It's a very attractive easy to use layout and thankfully, operates much better than 2013's SEN. The Apps selections are more interesting than in the past as well and we see lots of improvement from Sony in this area. Here are a few we noted:
    500PX
A new photo community App with tons of photographs taken by amateurs and pros alike. Very good browsing and enjoyable App.
    Active Artist
This new features allows the Sony TV to show content displayed on a Tablet (or maybe just a Sony tablet).
    Sony XBR-55X900B Entertainment Network Apps
The selection of apps on the Sony Entertainment Network is pretty good. Most of the services have good content to offer

    Social Viewing Feature

One of the most interesting features on Sony TVs for 2014 and beyond is Social Viewing. You can turn on the Twitter scrolling feed feature to find out what people are tweeting about the programing you are viewing. For many shows like The Voice or The Bachelor or many reality TV shows that creates some fun.
But perhaps the best part about this feature from my perspective is to be able to Skype with a split screen and talk to someone about what you are watching. Keep in mind that your company on Skype will also need to have this functionality in their TV either a Sony with Split screen Skyping or something similar from another brand.
    Sony XBR-55X900B Social View
This is the layout of the Soical View feature for the XBR-55X900B. The program in the largest window with a webcam feed on the left and live Twitter updates on the bottom of the screen
For example, imagine watching that intense college football game while talking to your best buddy about it on Skype right there on the same screen. Fun. Or imagine talking to your friend while watching one of your co-favorite reality shows. You can see where this would definitely add a social aspect aspect to watching TV. In our view of the feature it worked very well.

Sound Quality – Packs a Punch

Given the large side speakers I was surprised at how subdued the sound quality was initially, but Sony's emphasis on producing great sound quality with this TV has not been lost, as there is a great degree of separation between background and voice and it produces the best sound quality of any TV on the market fairly easily. The 2 tweeters and 2 woofers create a good range of sound that will do for just about any movie or sporting event. The woofers have a new magnetic fluid technology which allows for a more efficient yet high-fidelity sound quality. Compare the 65 watts of this TVs speakers with the typical 20 to 30 you normally get and you can understand the jump in quality.

    Appearance and Design - Unique

Well, if anything the design of this TV stands apart as unique with the significant side speakers of about 3 inches wide on the sides of the TV. It's still really good looking, with a piano black gloss finish and a wedge design to house the speakers. It's very similar to last year except for the stand. It has a silver 'y' shaped leg at each end making the overall base pretty wide. If it is too wide for your TV stand wall mounting is always a good option.
    Sony XBR-55X900B Wedge Design
The Wedge Design of the XBR-55X900B creates enough depth to house the speakers positioned on the side of the display

    Value Rating: 82/100

We know that Sony has a lot of practice with 4K technology. The XBR-55X900B does not disappoint in the picture quality department at all. We have also seen a pretty decent price drop for these 4K TVs. Pricing for the 55-inch starts at $4000. That's a lot more than similar falt 4K TVs like the Samsung UN55HU8550, or the LG 55UB8500 which are both nearly half the price. These other TVs don't have the superior picture qulaity or sound.

    Overall Rating: 87/100

  • It's always fun to compare different levels of TVs to find out how much the more expensive and lesser expensive HDTVs differ in quality and features. The 3 models listed in this article are sure to be some of the most popular models of 2014 and early 2015. While the Vizio and LG are not as high a tier as the Samsung, they may be the top models those companies produce in HDTV 1080p for 2014.
We've compiled a list of what we think are the most important differentiating factors in testing quality of these 2014/2015 LED HDTVs and performed the following shootout based on our findings through some very thorough investigation.
    Samsung UN55H8000 Curved LED TV
The Samsung H8000 has an elegant curved design with excellent picture quality to complete the package

    Picture Quality

1st H8000 – From front and center definitely the strongest contrast and color performance though not as deep a picture as the some of the excellent plasma TVs or OLED TVs of today. There is slight contrast loss from side angles at 35 degrees off center, but the super bright backlighting and rich blacks still allows for a good picture. The new curved design is somewhat effective in reducing the contrast loss from side angles.
2nd Vizio M552i – Vizio's new 32 zone LED backlighting design does help to deter contrast loss from side angles by concentrating on contrast up in key areas of the picture. The backlight really pops and there are a significant number of picture quality adjustments for this price range of TV. Tuning the Black Detail picture setting on the High setting really helps bring out a better picture. Contrast degradation begins at 20 degrees off center worsening significantly around 30.
2nd LG LB7200 - very good, but definitely sub quality to the H8000, and a tie with the Vizio. Colors are more muted but also slightly more accurate. Colors do not pop as much, side viewing angles are good as long as you are at perfect eye level, but suffer much more when viewing from top or bottom angles which could be an issue when wall mounting. Light flow-through is not nearly as prevalent from the LED edge lit backlighting. It's a dimmer picture when compared side by side.
Screenshot of the LG 55LB7200 LED TV
The LB7200 is not as bright and the colors are a little more subdued than the other TVs in the shootout. The sense of depth and shadow detail are strong points in the image

Upconverted Picture Quality from 480p and 480i Standard Definition

If you watch a lot of Netflix streaming or normal DVDs this is still a very important category.
1st - Samsung H8000 - This one performed the best in this category bringing Kill Bill, Tristan and Isolde DVDs to life. The light throughput from the H8000 really makes the difference to create more color and contrast around and in images.
A Standard Def DVD on the Samsung UN55H8000 LED TV
This shot from the DVD of Kill Bill Volume 2 really shows why the H8000 wins in this category
2nd – LG LB7200 - With a 480i we liked the LB7200 better as the Vizio offering though it was close. The LB7200's internal processors were weaker with a 480p signal.
3rd - Vizio M552i - The Vizio did a very nice job with Standard Definition signals and we were impressed with the light throughput on lower def signals.

    Sound Quality

1st LG LB7200 - The LG LB7200 clearly has the best sound quality of the three. Sound is richer, deeper with more bass and great clarity. It's a good thing, since the TV now measures about 3 inches in depth to accommodate the LB7200s much larger speaker on the bottom back of the TV.
2nd Samsung H8000 - Samsung's entry is second and still very good.
3rd Vizio M552i - The Vizio can really crank out the volume, but quality is lacking at times.

    3D Viewing Quality

1st LG 55LB7200 – Pop the settings to Standard and leave the TruMotion settings on the Smooth setting to get a fantastic image with tons of depth and almost no contrast degrading from the side angles. Even passive 3D glasses look exceptionally deep with this TVs picture enhancements. Since its 3D we're going for maximum Umph!
Samsung 55H8000 – Leave it on the Standard setting with the Smooth Auto Motion Plus feature on. The AutoMotion Plus feature adds tons of depth to 3D images and reduces judder to a non-issue. We also turned the 3D light setting up to High from the low position. Great picture but it does degrade from side viewing angles and is not as strong as the LB7200 3D picture. Changing the picture settings to Vivid and trying different combinations to improve the 3D picture saturation and depth proved fruitless as it created noticeable double images and glowing around figures.
3rd Vizio M552i – The M-series Vizio surprisingly does not have 3D compatibility. We were initially led to believe it would have passive 3D like last years M-series LED, but not so.

    Best Internet Browsing Option

1st LG LB7200 - The LG LB7200 easily trumped in this area with the voice control assisting to quickly and accurately bring up almost anything we could think to say. A good test, “LCD TV Buying Guide” gave the voice command control no problems. I tried it twice just to make sure and it nailed it both times with the Bing browser pulling up the search results for our site perfectly.
Samsung's H8000 - The voice regocnition kept focusing on the word "guide" and would not accurately receive the command therefore displayed the wrong results, also through a Bing browser. It only really works for one word. The new remote is an improvement bringing it closer to LG's level.
3rd M552i - The Vizio M552i of course was extremely slow to browse with due to use of the 5-way controller as the only method of search. The 5-way controller is just too slow to use when browsing to type in searches or URLs even though the browser worked well once you do get it typed in.

    Best Wifi Connection Playback

1st – The Vizio M552i took first in this area surprisingly with flawless execution of streaming content.
2nd – Samsung UN55F8000 was very good with little delay.
3rd – LG 55LB7200 is much improved from last years model with a new processing system.

    Best Remote Control

1st LG 55LB7200 - The voice control feature on the LG 55LB7200's Magic Remote wins for coolest feature and helps carry the LG in this category. When there is a hot signal coming into the LB7200 the arrow courser pops readily up on the screen ready for action. One drawback to the LG is that there is no quick menu button for settings. You have to click on the Smart TV button and then point and click the Settings icon tab in the bottom left of the screen. This brings up the Picture and Sound settings and other adjustments. It's an extra step. LG added an Input button to the Magic Remote for 2014/2015 which was badly needed for toggling between devices.
The Magic Remote that comes with some LG LED TVs
This is the updated look for the Magic Remote accessory. It's got all of the necessary buttons (even an Input button) and a mic button for engaging the voice controls
2nd H8000 - The H8000 remote has buttons and a touchpad and a very well thought out layout with an aspect ration button, menu button, and voice control activation button. It's super slick, but still does not work as well as the LG remote in speeding up browsing and control.
3rd M522i - The Vizio M552i as more of a value model of course has a more basic remote with no voice control, point and click or touchpad. It's a long way down from the LG and Samsung. But the remote is functionally fine and does have a Netflix button making that app come up quickly.

    Appearance and Design Quality

Both the Samsung UN55H8000 and the LG 55LB7200 have a slightly more frame-less appearance with only a thin strip of metal surrounding the TV. The Samsung H8000 has the slighly curved screen which adds, if nothing else, a Wow factor that the other two do not have. The LB7200 is a beautiful looking screen as well. The Vizio has a very thin bezel and a metal stand that adds some nice class to the TV and “gets the job done” in terms of grading as an attractive piece. But there is no question which one of these TVs brings more of a punch to the design arena.
    1st – Samsung UN55H8000
    2nd – LG 55LB7200
    3rd- Vizio M552i

Smart TV Options, Features, and Functionality

1st Still Samsung Smart TV (UN55H8000) with a few more relevant useable Apps but not a lot. Add SEC network, HBO Go, and a few others to the list. Loading and selection wasnt too difficult and I like the new menu with lots of space to add all your Apps in one view.
The Apps screen on the Samsung Smart Hub
The Apps screen in the Samsung Smart Hub has plenty of room for all of your favorite apps and then some
1st LG's 55LB7200 ties for first with it's new cloud based Smart TV system and is a huge improvement over last years offering. Loading and playback are fast, and the on-screen menu is simplified and so much easier to use.
2nd The Vizio M552i does a good job at handling Internet program loading and has a few convenient Smart TV buttons on the remote to get there faster. But it's not as fast at loading or playback as the other two.

    Gaming Performance

1st Samsung UN55H8000 - This TV had the best results in terms of input lag and motion blur. The AutoMotion Plus feature got rid of judder without a drastic change in the time to register an input from the controller. 3D gaming was a low point.
2nd - Vizio M522i - Has a dedicated picture mode for gaming. This is for optimal performance when it comes to input lag. The TV responds fairly well in our tests. We measured input lag at 40ms. That's not too bad at all for the average to hardcore console gamer. Shooters, racing, and action games play just fine on this TV. 30ms and below are considered excellent measurements, so this Vizio stands with the best of them.
3rd – LG LB7200 - The LB7200 is not a top choice for a gaming TV. The Gaming picture setting reduced input lag, but motion blur and judder were overly distracting. Using the Standard setting with TruMotion on reduces input lag but gave an overall worse result with motion blur and judder. 3D was about the same as the Samsung.
    Gaming on the Panasonic TC-P55ST60
Gran Turismo 5 looked great on the curved display of the Samsung H8000

    Best Value

1st The Vizio M552i at $899 is a keen value choice for 2014. It gets right many of the most important aspects of what is needed in a good HDTV while eschewing some of the fancier features.
2nd LG's 55LB7200 at $1400 and a super attractive frameless design and great remote and Smart TV system, we can overlook the fact that it does not have the best picture.
3rd Samsung UN55H8000 the best picture quality and appearance but of course demands a hefty price for that "collectors" item curved screen at $2200.

    Review! Samsung UN55HU8550 Review (UN55HU8550F)

The UN55HU8550 4K LED TV from Samsung is their top of the line TV that has the standard flat design. The HU9000 above it gets the curved design and a few more picture quality features. An important thing to note is the flat design keeps the price down. You still get some of the best picture quality from an LED TV, and it's 4K. We have also seen that the differences a curved screen has are very minimal when it comes to viewing angles. All the Smart Hub features like the Smart Touch remote, voice recognition, and Quad Screen multitasking are included. The camera for motion control is an additional purchase. The price for this 55-inch UHD LED TV is $3,000.

    Strenghts

    • Hardware local dimming boots contrast and creates brilliant images
    • Active 3D performance is impressive and images have lots of depth, AutoMotion Plus settings really help here
    • Fully fleshed out Smart TV features provide a lot of additional value in terms of streaming content
    • Smart Touch remote has been improved over last year with point and click functionality and more buttons
    • Instant On feature reduces the time it takes for the TV to boot up
    • 4 Pairs of glasses are included
    • 4 HDMI 2.0, 3 USB inputs

    Weaknesses

    • Side angle viewing is still a weak spot when it comes to LED TVs
    • Side angle viewing worsens when playing content in 3D
    • Voice control still has its share of limitations
    • Camera for motion control and Skype is an additional purchase

    Picture Quality Rating: 94/10

    Samsung UN55HU8550 4K LED TV
This shot is a prime example of the excellent contrast, light flow through, and sharpness of the HU8550
The clear coat, rich black screen and the high quality edge lighting LEDs allow for colors to pop and give a real sense of depth when viewing HD quality source material. The HU9000 above this TV features the Ultra Clear Panel which produces even more brilliant images in 4K. In-picture Light flow, as seen in the above photo, is some of the best we've seen on any TV you will find on the market except. Only OLEDs will do a better job at this currently. Black levels and contrast are two other strong points of picture quality on the UN55HU8550 thanks to UHD Dimming and Precision Black Local Dimming technologies. Blacks are deep even when other areas of the screen are bright. This really helps to reduce halo'ing that happens when there are a lot of dark and light areas on screen. Dark shadow detail is impressive as well.

    4K Standard and Future Proofing

4K is still in the early stages. Last year we saw 4K TVs released that didn't have HDMI 2.0 built right in. That puts early adopters in a bad postion. They have to rely on the manufacturer to upgrade their TVs. The HU8550 has 4 HDMI 2.0 inputs right on the cabinet ready to accept 4K signals. There is also something called the One Connect box. It is similar to the Samsung Evolution Kit, but with a focus on 4K distribution and playback standards. The box will also add features, content, and provide performance updates to the 55HU8550. This assures that early adopters won't be left behind if things change in the future.

    Samsung UN55HU8550 4K LED TV
Bright whites and deep blacks, strong depth, and lots of detail are seen in this shot

    Precision Black Local Dimming

This is actual hardware local dimming instead of software dimming seen on lower tier Samsung LEDs this year. It makes much more of a positive impact on picture quailty. We felt the image with this feature on was better than off, which is a rare case with features like this. This is due to separating the picture into hundreds of parts and pieces and changing the amount of backlighting from the LEDs. The Precision Black produced inky blacks without losing any dark shadow detail. To find the setting, look for the Smart LED option in the Picture Options menu. It is set to standard by default and we saw no difference when bumping it to high. When turned off, the picture seems to lose the vibrancy it had.

    Active 3D – Great Performance

The AutoMotion Plus feature adds tons of depth to 3D images and reduces judder to a non-issue. We also turned the 3D light setting up to High from the low position. Changing the picture settings to Vivid and trying different combinations to improve the 3D picture saturation and depth proved fruitless as it created noticeable double images and glowing around figures.

This year's Active 3D glasses are extremeyl light and have a more streamlined design

Side Angle Viewing – Still Room for Improvement

Color and contrast do fade when viewing from off center though much more subtly than I expected. In fact, the untrained eye will likely not see the difference in contrast saturation from side angles. Early models of the 4K TVs from Samsung did not look this good from the side and were more in line with standard HD LED TVs. Dont get me wrong, it's still a drawback, but not a pronounced one. This was probably the single biggest drawback compared to OLED aside from the deeper blacks on OLEDs.

    Features Rating - 87/100

    Samsung UN55HU8550 Touchpad Remote
This year's touch remote features an egg shape with a smaller touch pad, but more buttons
Surfing the web and the Smart TV features is a breeze with the new touchpad remote. It's much faster and easier than a traditional 5-way controller. The actual touch pad is a bit smaller this year, but that's okay because it now supports motion control. This brings it closer to LG's point and click Magic Remote. The smaller touch pad also leaves room for more useful buttons on the remote instead of the on-screen menus. The voice recognition only works for inputting searches if the soft keyboard for the search field is open. The new split screen feature is another addition that we think is a move in the right direction by Samsung. This makes it easy to view live TV and browse the web or use social media at the same time. A big plus on the HU8550 is the 4 split screen feature. TVs lower in the lineup are only able to handle 2 tasks at once.
